Step-by-Step

How to Charge Your EV Rental in Miami

New to EVs? Here is exactly what to do at any public Miami EV charging station.

Find a Compatible Station

Open PlugShare or your vehicle's built-in navigation. Tesla Model Y / Model 3 renters: head to any Supercharger. Equinox EV renters: use CCS stations (Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint) or select Superchargers with the NACS adapter. Check real-time availability before driving over.

Park and Open the Charge Port

Pull into an open stall, put the vehicle in Park. On a Tesla, press the button on the Supercharger handle — port opens automatically. On the Equinox EV, press the charge port button on the door. Connect the cable firmly until it clicks.

Start the Session

Tesla Superchargers start automatically — dashboard shows charging within 30 seconds. For Electrify America, EVgo, or ChargePoint: open the network app or tap your credit card on the contactless reader. Confirm the status light turns green.

Monitor and Disconnect at 80%

DC fast charging reaches 80% in 20–45 minutes. Charging slows significantly after 80% — unplug at 80% for quick stops and continue your trip. Stop session in app, press release button on cable, return cable to holster.

Pro Tips

Miami EV Charging Tips

Charge to 80%, not 100%. DC fast charging slows dramatically after 80%. Unplug at 80% for quick stops — half the time, minimal range loss.

Avoid peak hours at Aventura and Dadeland. Superchargers fill up on weekends 11am–3pm. Go early morning or after 8pm for open stalls.

Use hotel charging overnight. Many Miami Beach and Brickell hotels have Level 2 chargers — sometimes free for guests. See the Amped hotel delivery guide for hotels that work best with EV rentals.

Plan ahead for the Florida Keys. The Keys have very limited fast chargers. Charge to 90%+ at Dadeland before heading south. See the full Florida Keys EV road trip guide →

Equinox EV works at select Tesla Superchargers. The 2025 Equinox EV RS includes a NACS adapter. Confirm NACS availability in the Tesla app before driving over.

Tap-to-pay at most non-Tesla chargers. No account needed for Electrify America or EVgo — tap your credit card or phone. Superchargers bill your Tesla account automatically.
